History

Catholic Central was founded in 1985 / 1986 when the Windsor Catholic School Board voted to open a fourth Catholic high school in the city. In January 1986, a principal was chosen: Mr. Ed Johnston (principal 1986 - 1988), who began to visit the feeder schools and work with students who would soon be the school's first class, and would eventually become the first graduates of the school.[1]

The physical location of the school was the first major problem. It was decided that the first year classes would be held in the vacated St. Hubert's School in South Windsor (now occupied by Monseigneur Jean Noel). The first classes began in September 1986 with a staff of 16 dedicated teachers. Students were bused out to South Windsor for their classes. Only one of the original staff members remain Mr. M. McKittrick, head of the Physical Education Department.

In August 1987, negotiations with the Windsor Public School Board were completed and the school location moved from St. Hubert's. The new location had a long history in the area as a grade school (Guppy), a commercial high school (Commerce) and as the Adult Education Center. In the second year the staff grew to 36 and there were 470 students in grades 9 and 10. In the fifth year, there were 1074 students and 75 teachers.[2]

Expansion

In 1992, the school began a $4.6 million addition and renovations. The grand opening was held on Nov. 19, 1993 under the leadership of Mr. R. Stephens (Principal 1989 - 1994)

WE ARE THE COMETS!!!!

Comets are the most brilliant and most rare objects in the night sky. These soaring beacons with their beautiful tails come from other realms of the Solar System.

Perhaps there are adjectives and nouns in the above statement that best describes the students and teachers of our twenty five year old academic institution proudly known as Catholic Central. "Brilliant" and "rare or "unique" if you will, and "soaring beacons" are what CCH Comets are as they enact eh motto/mandate Christ waits for me in others. And "beautiful" in many ways. Long after graduation CCH students continue to be those "beacons" nearby and across the globe.

So how did we come to be known as "Comets", you ask?

Catholic Central was founded in 1986, the very year that Haley's Comet came close to the earth on its path through the solar system. In addition the current building that is CCH was first and elementary school (Guppy Elementary), then, a secondary school (Commerce High School). Coincidentally, their nickname happened to be "Comets". Thus, CCH readily accepted both the event and the tradition.

Consequently, a symbol of the "comet" and the tail adorns many dimensions of the school including its crest/coat of arms, as well as the center point of its impressive gymnasium. A comet and its tail wrap around the coach of arms with its head resting at the apex of the shield.

Yes, we are the Comets! We soar!
